If music is your middle name, then musical instruments are sure to adorn your room. Music is an excellent way to get rid of the blues. And if you are the creative type, then you can compose your own songs with musical instruments.

Musical instruments are mainly categorized by the way they generate sound. All musical instruments fall under one of the following – string, wind, percussion and keyboard, though there may be further divisions and sub-divisions. Examples of string instruments include guitars, violins, ukuleles and cellos. Wind instruments include pipes, sax, clarinet, flute and such other types. Drums, bongos, cymbals and bells fall under the percussions category. And keyboard instruments include pianos, harpsichords, organs and accordions. Over 1000 musical instruments are available across the world, including folk instruments.

If you want to play on your own, then it is better to start with a musical instrument you like, and then gradually master the instrument by joining music classes. If you like music in general and are not interested in specializing in any particular type of instrument then a keyboard can be the perfect choice. Electronic keyboards nowadays can produce all sorts of sound ranging from guitar tunes to drum beats. A variety of DJ equipments are also available on the market nowadays, which provide creative sound mixing options for the wannabe DJs as well as for the experienced disc jockeys.

On the other hand, if you were thinking of organizing a band then you would need different types of musical instruments. A band normally includes a couple of string instruments, percussions and preferably a wind instrument.

You can purchase your musical instruments online. Choose your favorite instrument from the various websites that you will find on the internet. They often offer discounts if you buy their package deals, which include various types of musical instruments. This can be your best option if you are planning a band with your friends.

Musical instruments can be a costly affair, especially if you are planning to buy the best available on the market. These can set you back by anything from $100 to over $10000. A good Yamaha or Roland electronic keyboard may cost almost $2500. Used musical instruments are often a good choice, especially if you are learning to play a new instrument. For beginners it is advisable to invest in musical instruments in the lower price range.

Musical instruments can also be made at home with items of daily use. Homemade musical instruments mainly fall under the category of percussion instruments. You can make almost anything, from shakers and jingle bracelets to drums and tambourines. You can also make wind instruments such as comb harmonica or kazoo. These help your child to be creative and can keep them busy. And you can now have your own band at home.

For anyone interested in electronics today, a visit to an electronics superstore, whether a bricks and mortar outlet or an internet outlet that specializes in one particular type of electronics. For example, there are internet stores that sell only cables of various types. You may find an outlet that sells only computer parts, or only cell phones. Whatever the type of accessories or equipment you are in need of, you will certainly be able to find examples on the internet. The prices are competitive as well, because you can usually be certain that an internet store may not have high overhead costs. In fact, an internet store may not have any inventory, but relies only on drop shipments in order to distribute their product.

Equipment that is available today that is helpful in recording, creating and listening to music includes not only the instruments themselves, such as electronic keyboards, guitars and other instruments, but the components that are used in repairing, renovating and keeping these electronic instruments in peak running condition. For example, keyboards have computerized parts that can become nonoperational due to age or just from deterioration of the parts. Sometimes dust or debris will render an electronic component useless. When this occurs, usually a chip or board can be replaced in a ‘plug and play’ style action.

In the past couple decades it seems that repairing electronics equipment is less likely to happen than simply replacing non working or obsolete components. Computer owners for example will replace the hard drive with a larger unit or add RAM. They will even replace a motherboard. The owner will add peripherals that are better quality or larger or faster so that the computer accessories work more efficiently.

Most home offices today have computers and printers with internet access, but they also have a fax machine or make use of fax software. Computers may have printer/copier equipment and many offices have a scanner available as well. There may be external hard drives so that additional data can be stored and an external zip drive holds even more information safely.

Significant amounts of data can be transmitted by the use of a small hand held drive that plugs into the USB port on the computer so that a file can be saved from one computer and transferred physically to another computer and downloaded to the second computer.

Better sound quality is a key factor in many of the new computers being built today. Even the older computers will often be upgraded by added better quality speakers so that recorded music can be enjoyed fully. Computer phones and internet phone service relies on good audio components.

The keyboard itself and the mouse often are the first things to wear out and must be replaced periodically, particularly the mouse. Many people have gone to a wireless mouse and keyboard, both work very well in most office situations. Ergonomic keyboards reduce the amount of arm, wrist and shoulder discomfort that builds up in those who are using the computer for long periods of time.

Synthesizer is an instrument that helps to create and play different kinds of sounds. They require external sound boxes. This instrument has different kinds of models. The models vary on the basis of the functions, facilities, size etc.
There are three main types of synthesizers, analogue, digital and software. In the analogue form, continuous voltages in different proportions model sound wave. Whereas in a digital synthesizer various separate information units are used. A software synthesizer makes use of various software to mix sounds.
By assimilating these three types, a new kind of synthesizer is made, which is called hybrid synthesizer.
There are different methods of synthesis.
- Subtractive synthesis
- Granular synthesis
- Physical modeling synthesis
- Frequency modulation synthesis
- Phase distortion synthesis
- Additive synthesis
- Sample based synthesis
- Sub harmonic synthesis
Elisha Gray invented the first electronic synthesizer in the year 1876. After this a lot more experiments occurred with the synthesizer and hence different kinds of synthesizers were invented.
Microtonal Electronic keyboard was made by Ivor Darreg in 1937, ANS synthesizer by Russian scientist Evgeny Murzin. Only one ANS was made. Presently it is preserved at the Lomonosov university of Moscow.
In the 1960s, development of synthesizers took place. But they were so big in size that they had to be kept inside the studios only.
Today synthesizers have become digital. They are lot more advanced than the previous ones. Now it is possible to arrange a whole song in synthesizer. You don’t need any acoustic instruments. Synthesizers will provide you all these acoustic effects. You can also have different sound effect like, the sound of a moving train, people talking, sound of applauses etc.
You can even record or create new sound effects. Synthesizer is becoming popular in the music industry. Synthesized music is slowly emerging. Even films are using synthesized songs. The first song to be fully synthesized was from the James bond flick, ‘On Her Majesty’s Secret Service’, in 1969.
After this film, using synthesized music became a trend for films. In the year 1982, John Carpenter made a film called ‘The Thing’, which had all synthesized songs.
Modern synthesizers give you many other facilities also. You can play and can record what you have just played instantly. How? Simple. Record it in a floppy or C.D. It has got the floppy and c.d. drive.
Modern synthesizers have a huge option of sound balancing too. You can balance your sound on your own and can settle down with the kind of sound you want.
As it is capable of delivering various sound effects, you can easily get the instrument you want. Like you want to play saxophone. But you don’t know how to play saxophone. With a synthesizer around you don’t even need to know. Just switch on the synthesizer, chose the saxophone option and go on playing saxophone in the synthesizer rid.
Sounds interesting, right? If you seriously want to be musically versatile, then this is the right choice for you. But remember, good quality synthesizers are a bit expensive. But nothing can beat the love and passion for great music.

Parents of youth, age 12-18, looking for a creative environment for their budding young musicians, will now have more opportunity to grab a spot in The Collective Sound (TCS) Music Academy’s signature touring Summer Rock & Roll Music Camp with, not one, but two Summer Sessions for 2008. An expected 100 youth will gather from around the globe at the CSU Chico campus for three-week sessions running from July 6th-25th and July 20th-August 8th, to write, record, and perform their own collaborations, create music videos, epks, and band photos, and open for headliners along the three-stop Element Youth Movement Coop Tour – a collaborative art, music, and educational event with the Boys and Girls Club of America and Element Skateboards. The co-ed music camps accept all levels of musicians with a focus on guitar, bass, drums, voice, keyboard/piano and electronic music. Visit www.thecollectivesound.com for registration and scholarship information. Registration ends July 1, 2008.

The Collective Sound Music Academy, a non-profit, has been filling a gap in youth music education for over a decade, with programming that focuses on collaboration and creativity in current music genre. Working with music industry leaders such as Capitol Records, Volcom Entertainment, Sabian, the D’Addario Foundation, Gallien-Krueger, Gretsch Drums, Gibraltar, Dunlop, Roland, Digidesign, Yamaha, and Genz-Benz as well as music teachers, students will not only experience the creative process and hone their instrumental and technical skills, but will get a good look at the music industry.

“Much of what’s taught in school music programs today is repetition of selected traditional music…with little emphasis on the collaborative process that is inherent in writing and performing music” says TCS Founder, Zac Smith. “In today’s scene, creativity is key and the use of a sampler or software application is as relevant as, say, the use of a trumpet. Our goal is to present youth from varying socio-economic backgrounds with an outlet for creative expression through the vehicle of current music trends.”

According to Smith, kids not only compose their music for live performance, they also produce additional creative media content in the form of band photos, recordings, midi compositions, music videos, electronic press kits, and online profiles, giving them the tools needed by today’s do-it-yourself musicians.

“TCS showed me that playing the drums is not just a hobby, but something that I can actually do for the rest of my life,” says student Lane Beckstrom. “There are a variety of youth based programs out there that involve sports and other activities, yet it is peculiar that creative expression through music has few guided and funded options. It is a valid plight to offer youth a platform to conceptualize and bring to fruition their musical ideas, while teaching them the value working and communicating with others in developing an idea. Our foundation is promoting and empowering young musicians and developing their confidence in their creative and musical potential.”

Highlights from last year’s summer music camp, including watching the kids work on a music video for award-winning Australian artist, Ben Lee, can be seen in the Web Series “Let it Be Heard…” – The Story of the Collective Sound at: www.thecollectivesound.com.

“As soon as camp was over, I couldn’t wait for it to start up again,” says last year student, Andrew Rywak.

Our friends and family called us pioneers because we bit the bullet and bought the first TV set just in time for the first Louis/Walcott fight in 1947. It was a massive three foot high Philco console with a barely detectable ten inch viewing surface, centered, and about five inches from the top. It looked like a postage stamp pasted on the Great Wall of China. The instruction book, written in hieroglyphics, was particularly intimidating because no one in the family believed that pictures could fly through the air. It took a long time for us to accept the miracle of travelling sound waves, but this was too much to swallow. The mystery box only had three knobs, ON/OFF/VOLUME, CHANNEL SELECTION and PICTURE ADJUSTMENT. There were two expandable metal rods aligned in the shape of a V, which could be widened and swivelled, known as a “Rabbit-ears antenna.” It sat on top of the console and bore no resemblance to the ears of a rabbit, unless the rabbit had auditory nerves in the center of his head. The first two knobs were self-evident, but the last one, in conjunction with the antenna, showed an infinite number of variations which didn’t seem to be reproducible. To maximize clarity, one had to match the 10,000 or more antenna positions with a numberless knob setting. I was able to maximize Channel 5 clarity by holding the antenna at a 24 degree angle, while dangling my left leg at 47 degrees over the right armrest of the couch, unless it was raining. In that case, if I turned the knob one turn to the right and straddled the left side of the easy chair, the picture improved, on Thursdays only. By the time I optimized Channel 5, the program was over. However I did enjoy the midnight prayer. And dear old Grandma, who was too petrified to touch a knob or the antenna, spent most of her time watching test patterns. When not watching test patterns, she loved seeing Bishop Fulton J. Sheen because he wore a yarmulke and she didn’t understand English very well,Though still in denial of flying pictures, electronic innovations came at me too fast to absorb. I now learned that these non-existent pictures could also be recorded on a piece of plastic. So I ventured into the world of VCRs. Unfortunately having never even trusted my alarm clock, I forced myself to watch every taping. The machine had a sneaky look on its face and could not be trusted when I turned my back. So now I have a massive collection of operas, ballets, shows and videotapes which I don’t watch any more. And all it cost me was an angry wife, kids who grew up without a father and friends who gave up on me. Now of course tapes are becoming obsolete and they have been replaced by men’s underwear- DVDs.Another inkling that the world was passing me by came with my introduction to computers. I knew that the abacus was born over 2000 years ago. But I still couldn’t fathom how a bamboo frame with beads sliding on wires could solve arithmetic problems. It seemed more appropriate to play music on it. I had seen similar structures on baby cribs and didn’t know how to use them either. Thus, bursting with ignorance, I stumbled on to an industrial computer which used 10,000 vacuum tubes, 1800 square feet of floor space and consumed 180,000 watts of electrical power. It seemed even more intimidating than the crib, but I studied it with uncharacteristic patience. Had I had a choice, I would have preferred hearing lectures in baby talk instead of “computer speak.” They explained that the monster had punch card 1/0, 1 multiplier, 1 divider/square rooter and 20 adders using decimal ring counters. I found no room for disagreement, although I would have loved to disembowel the instructorI tried to look intelligent and didn’t express my opinion that the computer would make a good center island for an oval running track. Reading the brochure introduced even more confusing terms to add to my useless collection. Actually my only previous exposure to punch cards was on a weaving loom. I waited for hours hoping that a blue worsted fabric would emerge from the other end of the ENIAC.The evolution progressed to Random Access Memory (or RAM), Magnetic Core (hence the company name “Apple”) Memory and the Transistor Circuit Element. This increased the RAM capacities from 8,000 to 64,000 words (damn my limited vocabulary!) with access times of 2 to 3 milliseconds. (I’m retired. What’s my hurry? My sight is so bad that I can’t even read the millisecond hand on my watch). Downsizing of circuitry, photo printing of circuit boards and vacuum deposition of transistors became the norm and entire assemblies became available on tiny “Chips.” What the hell is a chip? I only know them as bone fragments, poker equipment, pieces of chocolate, etc.etc. and never associated any of them with information storage. Yet, by some miracle, this led to the introduction of personal computers (PCs).I stoically avoided PCs for many years, until my employer provided me with a laptop and commanded me to use it. I initially felt like Grandma, only I stared at a monitor with funny looking little icons instead of test patterns, afraid to touch the keyboard. I was told that my unit could process about four million instructions per second. Panic attacks betrayed my inability to issue more than 300,000 instructions per second, despite my superior leadership skills. While I dawdled in panic, advances like networking, E mail and electronic publishing shot past me. When I succumbed to pressures and tried word processing, my first epic was WWWWWWWWWWW 197 times. I guess I held the key down too long. My old Remington typewriter never abused me like that. But I am learning. After chasing the mouse all over the walls, I almost have it under control. All I have to do is hold my right hand steady with a C clamp. I understand that my computer “talks” to my printer on my request. I never hear the conversation, but they tell me it takes place. I wonder what would happen if the printer refused the instruction and told the computer to shove it up its telephone jack. Would the screen now be littered with invectives? I would gladly picket for the first amendment rights of the printer to speak its mind. My latest foray into the world of technology involves the cell phone. How complex could a telephone be? You just punch out the number you want. But no; we also have call waiting, caller ID, address book, rings that play Rachmaninoff’s Prelude in C Sharp Minor, timers and screens that tell us we are “roaming,” when we know exactly where we are. It gets even more threatening with the advent of picture phones, etc.etc. You can be awakened with a picture of your Mother-in-law, pants pressed, your coffee ready, your shower started and your car waiting in front of the house. As soon as computer science learns to perform a few more human tasks, I expect to be arrested for bigamy. Emotions will probably become programmable, but the thought of a passionate hunk of metal licking my ear turns me off.Scientists say that I am 63% water and the balance of subatomic particles like electrons, protons and neutrons. Since we know that electrons do most of the work, why are my electrons so hostile to electrons in the new technologies? Why can’t we electrons just get along?by David Sahud

Executive Summary

This white paper discusses the evolution of portable consumer electronics from the Electronic Organizer to Apple’s iPhone.

Introduction

In 1997, the Motorola Startac and PalmPilot were state of the art consumer electronics for the mobile professional. They were superb tools for staying in touch with customers, managing your calendar, and organizing contacts. Portable consumer electronics have improved tremendously over the years. This document describes the various developments in the field of touchscreen enabled consumer electronics.

Many Portable Information Managers or Electronic Organizers were developed in the 1980s, but did not achieve mass market acceptance. Problematic user interfaces were the main issue. Apple CEO John Sculley introduced the Newton “Personal Digital Assistant” at CES in 1992, but its high price, somewhat large size, and troublesome handwriting recognition limited sales. Finally, in 1996 US Robotics released the first PalmPilot PDA. It combined a touchscreen, handwriting recognition, and intuitive user interface in a small form factor with excellent battery life. This first successful implementation of a PDA demonstrated the true utility of touchscreens in portable consumer electronics. Resistive touchscreens used on the PalmPilot still had their issues. The screen would sometimes lose alignment and not recognize touch positions correctly, requiring a recalibration. Display brightness was dimmed by the touchscreen transparency. Also, the screen could suffer failures over time due to mechanical flexing of the top layer. Some companies approached the user interface problem from other angles, and succeeded. Research In Motion released their BlackBerry 850 in 1998. It was a unique combination of wireless connected email with built-in PDA functionality. The keyboard was small, but very ergonomic and ideal for quickly typing email. The operating system and applications were well designed, with excellent integration and usability. In fact, RIMs email application was licensed for by Nokia, Motorola, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, Siemens, HTC, and QTeck for their own cell phone designs. RIM went on to enter the handset market with a portfolio of increasingly sophisticated smart phones, and eventually claim the #1 market share.

Further evolution in semiconductors, LCDs, batteries, and material technology brought remarkable products to the market. Motorola’s 2004 Razr is a prime example. The impossibly slim, stylish design was an instant success, selling over 50 million units in just two years, and is still popular. Still, the Razr was a poor substitute for calendar or address book applications. Anyone trying to type a significant amount of text with a phone keypad has experienced this issue. Again, user interface was the limiting factor for portable device functionality. Meanwhile, cell phone manufacturers were still testing the market with various user interfaces. Palm continued to incorporate resistive touchscreens with their Tungsten, Zire, and Treo models. The Sony Ericsson P800 (2002), Motorola A780 (2003), BENQ P30 (2004), and AT&T 8525 (2006) also tried resistive touchscreens. Swedish manufacturer Neonode launched the N1 phone in 2004 with an IR optical touchscreen. Each phone had its high points, but neither significantly changed the industry. In late 2006, LG released their first touchscreen phone, the Prada. Originally available in tri-band GSM for the European market, the Prada had a unique industrial design enabled by capacitive touchscreen technology. Known as “Projected Capacitive”, this type of touchscreen uses indium-tin-oxide (ITO) transparent metallic sensing elements deposited on a glass or film substrate. The result is a very rigid, scratch resistant, highly transparent touchscreen with excellent accuracy and no need for calibration. In addition, projected capacitive technology also enables multi-touch, an important feature for portable electronics user interfaces. Consumer demand for this new “look and feel” was clear, with LG selling over 800,000 Prada phones in 2007. In June 2007, Apple entered the smart phone market with their much anticipated iPhone. The instantly recognizable sleek and minimalist industrial design was realized with capacitive touchscreen technology. Apple showcased the true possibilities for touchscreen enabled consumer electronics with their highly integrated suite of applications. The entire front surface of the device became a reconfigurable, context sensitive, multi-touch user interface.
