Let your keyboard talk

It wasn’t that long ago that one rushed off to the library when planning one’s travels. In South Africa, where travel and tourism is an important but an unnaturally small industry when compared to the income generated elsewhere, the library or your trusted travel agent was the place to start.

Word of mouth guiding one to personally recommended Hotels, pleasant experiences of one’s friends also helped. The internet is merely some fifteen or so years old, with users expected to double over the next three years, still in it’s infancy stage but some 70% of all travel bookings are made via the net.

We do business with other types of companies that have celebrated their centenary and we think they are old…in internet terms, five years is old. To those of you who are over fifty and went to school when perhaps slide rules were the order of the day, perhaps lucky enough to be allowed to use a calculator toward the end of your school years….you will appreciate what has happened over recent times.

Arguably, our generation, those of us over forty years, contributed hugely to the onset of the, let’s call it the information technology revolution, what with mobile phones, personal computers, IPods and MP3 players, personal organisers et al….. how old were you when you learned about the industrial revolution; when stone age man invented the wheel; when man conquered space (a turn of phrase)…well the internet and other forms of the “digital revolution” will go down in history as one of the periods that changed the way we think.

Going back to holidays and travel arrangements, surf the net, in South Africa we have some stunning sites offering an array of tourism services, for obvious reasons my favourite is staysa.co.za, book a Hotel, plan your holiday; how do book a flight or perhaps a guest lodge. Yes, there are still travellers who go the traditional route of the suburban travel advisor or agent, I do think there remains a need, if you need destination information, cannot type and do not have access to a computer, this is for you. For the rest of us, type in “holiday house rent Port Alfred” and you will be amazed how easy it really is, faced with more opportunities and information than anyone would ever need. You will be invited to visit sites with information; with holiday homes to rent; B&B and guesthouse accommodation catering for every need or desire.

For the newer cyber travellers, here are a few tips….

Never forget to always either send a confirmation e-mail and/or phone the establishment a day or two before my arrival….perhaps I am over cautious but this is better than problem on arrival. Here’s wishing you a great holiday.
